In Her Own Words, DU Girl Recounts Horror of a Camera Staring at Her in Her Own Bathroom '9.30pm, a 'safe' residential area Hudson Lane, Delhi, the place I have been staying for last two years became a place that will haunt me for a long time. I was taking a bath in my pg when I saw a camera lens pointed towards me through the washroom exhaust. The window has a mesh, which claimed by the landlady to be completely opaque. Behind the bathroom is a dingy shady lane. The moment I tried to look closer, the person pulled the camera back and it immediately disappeared. I called out to my roommate, and told her what had happened and asked her to check, but by that time it occurred to me that he must have already fled. We called up the landlady and the cops. Police reached within minutes and investigated the area, but there was no trace of the culprit. I don't know whether I should feel lucky that I caught the camera lens or should I feel scared to the core that this has been go...

A captured Chinese tank crewman being guarded by a Vietnamese soldier, during the Sino-Vietnamese War, which began on this day in 1979. Less than four years after the end of the Vietnam War, the former communist allies turned against each other and a new war broke out in Indochina involving Vietnam, China and Cambodia. On 25 December 1978, following a series of bloody cross-border raids into Vietnam by Pol Pot's troops, Vietnam launched a full-scale invasion of Cambodia and overthrew the genocidal Chinese-backed Khmer Rouge regime in two weeks. In response to Vietnam's invasion of Cambodia, China launched a punitive operation against Vietnam. After a massive artillery bombardment on February 17, 1979, hundreds of thousands of Chinese troops crossed Vietnam's northern border to invade the country. Despite initial progress and enjoying numerical superiority, the PLA soon found itself bogged down in a costly conflict against Vietnamese irregulars, even though many battle-harde...

On 1 February 1968, after the outbreak of the Tet offensive, Associated Press photographer Eddie Adams captured the moment South Vietnamese General Nguyen Ngoc Loan, chief of the national police, executed Viet Cong officer Nguyen Van Lem, also known as Bay Lop, on a street in Saigon. It became one of the most famous photos of the Vietnam War, won Adams the 1969 Pulitzer Prize and stirred up the anti-war movement in the United States. ⠀ But few people know the story behind the image. According to South Vietnamese sources, Lem was a member of a Viet Cong death squad who had been targeting and killing South Vietnamese police officers and their families. Lem was allegedly captured at the site of a mass grave and had executed South Vietnamese Lt. Col. Nguyen Tuan, his wife, five of their six children, and the officer's 80-year-old mother less than 36 hours prior to his capture. ⠀ The lone survivor of Tuan's family, Huan Nguyen, was 9 years old at the time. He was shot three times du...

Oleg, a Ukrainian soldier at the Belbek military base in Crimea, kisses his girlfriend Svetlana through the gates of the base entrance on March 3, 2014. His base and several other Ukrainian military bases across Crimea were surrounded by the "little green men," heavily-armed Russian soldiers without identifying insignia. 10 years ago today, Russia began the invasion and annexation of Crimea. The Russian occupation of Crimea in 2014 occurred against the backdrop of a power vacuum and political instability in Ukraine following the Revolution of Dignity, also known as the Maidan Revolution, which ousted pro-Russian president Victor Yanukovych by a parliamentary vote of 328-0. On February 27, 2014, thousands of Russian troops in unmarked uniforms, often referred to as little green men, appeared throughout Ukraine's Crimea. They began to occupy key locations in Crimea and took control of government buildings, military bases, and strategic infrastructure. Russia initially denie...

As the longest-serving commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss was an instrumental figure in the "Final Solution," the Nazi plan to systematically murder the Jews of Europe. An early member of the Nazi Party, Höss later became a member of the SS. In early 1940, he arrived at newly built Auschwitz, where he lived at a nearby villa with his wife and children. As commandant, Höss was soon tasked with the execution of the "Final Solution." He was instrumental in developing the gassing process, leading to the adoption of the pesticide Zyklon B in Auschwitz's gas chambers. Höss recalled seeing the effects of Zyklon B gassing in action. "Protected by a gas mask, I watched the killing myself. In the crowded cells, death came instantaneously the moment the Zyklon B was thrown in. A short, almost smothered cry, and it was all over … ." After a reassignment, Höss returned to Auschwitz in 1944 to oversee the mass murder of Hungarian Jews—code-named Operation Höss. Th...

The Last Days of the Dachau Concentration Camp
The Last Days of the Dachau Concentration Camp The historic winter of 1944-45 tested the endurance of the Dachau concentration camp’s captive population. News, much of it good, about the Allies’ recent triumphs —stopping Adolf Hitler’s Ardennes Offensive and the unleashing of the Red Army’s Vistula-Oder Offensive (mid-January 1945)—seeped in. As the weeks passed, confidence in Allied victory, while fragile, struck roots in Dachau. There were powerful reasons for inmates, though, to temper expectations. Despite the fragmentary knowledge of the state of the war they gained, there was much uncertainty about how long the Hitler regime might withstand the Allied advance. Due to its location in Bavaria, quite distant from the battle fronts, liberation would not happen anytime soon. Undoubtedly, the omnipresence of the SS guaranteed that attempted escape or rebellion would be met with extreme violence. Other factors besides the SS’s wanton cruelty incited new terror among Dachau’s prison...

Scientists believe it happened about fifty to a hundred years ago....it chased a raccoon or squirrel into the tree, climbed up inside, and got stuck. A mummified dog has been found inside a tree trunk 20 years after it got wedged in while “chasing a raccoon”. The hunting dog, aptly named Stuckie, was discovered in a hollow stretch 28ft up by loggers chopping up the chestnut oak in Georgia, US, in 1980. …Instead of sending the tree off to the sawmill, the workers from Kraft Corporation donated it to Forest World – a tree museum in Waycross Georgia. Staff at the museum reckon the dog’s body mummified because an upward draft through the hollow tree created a chi...

Nearly 4,000 African Americans Were Lynched In One 73-Year Period
Nearly 4,000 African Americans Were Lynched In One 73-Year Period between 1877 and 1950, 3,959 African Americans were lynched — 700 more incidents than had ever been calculated before, black lynchings in the South occurred when unsubstantiated suspicions arose about black involvement in white society, and when African Americans actively resisted racial subordination. In 1904, a man named General Lee was accused of knocking on a white woman's door in Reevesville, South Carolina. He was lynched by a white mob. When World War I veteran William Little refused to remove his army uniform in front of a group of white men in Blakely, Georgia, in 1919, he was also attacked and lynched by a mob.
