Ethnic Conflicts and the Brutalisation of the Battles

Image
Ethnic Conflicts and the Brutalisation of the Battles Heavy defeats by the Austrian army in Serbia Brutal treatment of the civilian population by Austrian units The Serbian-Austrian conflict led to deliberately staged hostility and open hatred. The escalation of violence from summer 1914 was reinforced by the fact that a radicalised Austro-Hungarian army took over all authority in deployment and operations, and in many cases stopped differentiating between the military and civilians. The regional boss of Bosnia and Commander of the Monarchy's military forces in the Southeast theatre of war, Oskar Potiorek, had already considered the Bosnian Serbs to be potential enemies before hostilities began and now transferred his mistrust and aversion to the entire Serbian population. The latter was accordingly described in orders given to Habsburg soldiers as a ‘hateful society of assassins’ towards whom any kind of ‘humanity and soft heartedness’ was inappropriate.  From mid-August 1914, thi

17-Year-Old Stanley Kubrick’s Photos Of 1940s New York Prove That He Was Born Genius Before Stanley Kubrick directed arguably some of the best movies ever made like "2001: Space Odyssey" or "The Shining," he was a simple teenager in New York looking for a job. But even then, when the 17-year-old got his hands on a photo camera, he couldn't hide the talent within. Bored Panda has gathered a collection of his photos of New York from 1945 to 1950, when he was working in the Look magazine. During that time Stanley got many insights into what makes a photograph work: "I think aesthetically recording spontaneous action, rather than carefully posing a picture, is the most valid and expressive use of photography." He quickly made a name for himself by telling stories through photos, which eventually led him to moving pictures and his place in the filmmakers' hall of fame. Oh, and if you're into street photography as well, let Stanley himself give you a

Loughboro stepped forward with a blindfold and tied it around Tony's eyes. "Would you care for a cigarette?" the captain asked. "Yes, I would," Tony said. "I'll take a king-size mentholated." The captain drew one out of a pack and placed it in Tony's mouth. He was about to light it when a uniformed inspector from the city's Antismoking Unit ran on the parade ground and cried, "Halt! Eyewitness Account of Einsatz Executions. On October 5, 1942, by accident, Hermann Friedrich Graebe a German engineer and manager of a German construction firm in the Ukraine, and his foreman, came upon an Einsatz execution squad killing Jews from the small town of Dubno in the Ukraine. He gave the following eyewitness account: “My foreman and I went directly to the pits. Nobody bothered us. Now I heard rifle shots in quick succession from behind one of the earth mounds. The people who had got off the trucks – men, women and children of all ages – had to undress upon the order of an SS man who carried a riding or dog whip. They had to put down their clothes in fixed places, sorted according to shoes, top clothing and undergarments. I saw heaps of shoes of about 800 to 1000 pairs, great piles of under-linen and clothing. Without screaming or weeping these people undressed, stood around in family groups, kissed each other, said farewells, and waited for a sign from another SS man, who st

He had stripped down to his underwear, his nak£ d torso bleeding from scratches. And he was shivering from the cold. But he wasn’t afraid. His uncle, Calvin Sanders, and his dad were nearby, and they were confident they could get him out. In fact, they’d helped him into the tight spot, hoisting him through a small crack in the ceiling to push deeper into the Pacific north-west cave, further in than any human had ever been before. But now, without a boost or anything to push off of with his legs, he was struggling to squeeze back through the space, similar in size to the opening of a dog door, but lined with sharp, rough, lava-made basalt rock. “I first took off my hoodie to fit through,” Jacob

On this day, Jun 24, 2017, Naked woman jumping on the rooftop down here" Imagine this: it is a sunny Sunday afternoon in Manhattan. You are looking outside of your hotel room. On the rooftop of a neighboring building is a naked young woman jumping around. Well, let me first show you the scene as it was the preceding day (to follow the story, keep scrolling down) We are back in October 2015. So, seeing this woman, what do you do? Talk to your wife: "honey, there is a naked woman jumping on the rooftop down here". What does she say without even bothering to come and to have a look: "oh, yeah, suuuuuure, a naked woman!" Ok, the only way forward was to collect evidence, i.e. open the window, grab the camera and take pictures. I can only show you two of the pictures I took as all the others would probably be an issue in terms of censorship. At some point, she seemed to be done, got back to a bag, dressed and disappeared. My wife and I kept wondering in the subsequen

Love for a child's protection will prevail, 1944 Meet Karl-Heinz Rosch, a German machine gunner during WW2. Despite a troubled upbringing, Karl showed courage and compassion. Drafted into the Wehrmacht Armed Forces after graduation, fate had other plans for him. In October 1944, amidst Allied artillery fire on a farm, Karl noticed two children playing in the yard, seemingly unaware of the danger. Without hesitation, he rushed to their aid, leaving his rifle behind, and safely carried the children to the basement.  However, tragedy struck when he returned for his weapon, as he was hit by a grenade, resulting in a devastating and gruesome end...  Surprisingly, for 60 years, Karl's selfless act remained hidden, concealed by his status as an enemy soldier. Not even his family knew the details of his sacrifice. It was only when the rescued children came forward with their testimonies that the public learned about the young German soldier's bravery. Due to his allegiance to the e
