George was the son of Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, and Cecily Neville, and the brother of two kings: Edward IV and Richard IlI. As his brother Edward IV ascended to the throne in 1461, George was granted the title of Duke of Clarence, cementing his place as one of the most influential men in England. However, tensions soon began to simmer within the royal family as Edward's favouritism towards his wife's family, the Woodvilles, rankled George and his allies. In 1470, George's simmering resentment boiled over into open rebellion when he allied himself with the powerful Warwick the Kingmaker in a bid to overthrow his own brother. The rebellion proved short-lived, and George was forced to flee to France, where he sought refuge at the court of Louis XI.
