The second picture is a really iconic photograph that reveals the brutality of the War. And not a lot of people knows what's really the story behind it. The most influential photos always have a story attached to them. Napalm Girl, caught in a moment of desperation in 1972, encapsulated the terror of the U.S. war in Vietnam. The legend of Phan Thi Kim Phuc, the girl in question, was simple and gratifying to opponents of the war. On June 7, 1972, elements of the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) occupied the South Vietnamese town of Trang Bang. They were met by ARVN and the Vietnamese Air Force (VAF). In the three-day battle that followed, NVA forces entered the town and used the civilians for cover. This was an old tactic for the NVA, as it usually kept them from getting blasted by airstrikes and artillery. Often these religions were so intermixed with Christianity, or Christianity was so intermixed with them, that it was not easy for the Roman Church to decide whether they should be persecuted as infidels, heretics or schismatics. The Cathars were a case in point. They were in some ways spiritual successors to the Manichæans. The Manichæans had been followers of Mani (c AD 216 - 276) who claimed to be the Holy Ghost incarnate. His beliefs were based upon Zoroastrianism and Gnosticism, and had a profound effect upon the early Christian Church. (St Augustine, remember, had been a Manichæan for ten years). Emmett Louis Till was a 14-year-old African-American boy from Chicago who was abducted, tortured and lynched in Mississippi in 1955, after being accused of offending a white woman in her family's grocery store while visiting his uncle and cousins.  Emmett’s body was found in Tallahatchie River in Mississippi by a young fisherman. He was floating upside down because he was tied by his neck to a cotton gin fan with barbed wire.  The fisherman called the authorities.  Emmets body was brutally mutilated by Roy Bryant, and his half-brother J.W. Milam. His attackers stripped him naked, beat him, shot him through the side of the head, gouged out one, left his other hanging on his cheek, and cut of his genitalia.  The only person that could identify Emmett’s body was his uncle, Moses (Mose).
