Last Picture From The Eruption Of Mount St. Helens When Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington on May 18, 1980, photographer Robert Landsburg was within a few miles of the volcano and he knew there was no way out. Aware that any escape attempt would be futile, he stayed in the thick of the action and took as many pictures as he could before securing his camera in his backpack. As the ash grew thicker, Landsburg covered the backpack with his body, determined to ensure that his images would survive ,determined photographer National Geographic The Hilo Tsunami Of 1946 On April 1, 1946, an 8.6-magnitude earthquake off the coast of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska sent shockwaves throughout the Pacific. University of Michigan recover a Woolly Mammoth skull in a farmers field in Lima Township, Michigan A year after a farmer’s discovery, the University of Michigan will publicly display bones from a mammoth that lived more than 10,000 years ago. The exhibit opens Saturday at the university’s Museum of Natural History. Scientists aren’t done yet: They plan to return to a Washtenaw County farm for another dig in November. Jim Bristle, a farmer in Lima Township, discovered the bones while installing a drain pipe in his soybean field. He called the University of Michigan, and experts recovered roughly 40 percent of the mammoth’s skeletal mass, including a skull with teeth and tusks. The bones were just 10 feet below the surface. The mammoth may have been a hybrid, between a woolly mammoth and a Columbian mammoth. Enjoy Christmas 2023 with these promotions offers and its benefits. Special offer for our readers and it's free. Tortured, beaten, castrated by soldiers from his own army - for joining Mau Mau In the eyes of many historians, the campaign against Mau Mau fighters was the bloodiest British suppression of any of their colonial uprisings anywhere in the world When Mwangi Kanyari returned to Kenya in 1946 after fighting for the allies in Egypt in World War II, he expected land and freedom; to live peacefully on a small farm with his wife and family amid the fertile White Highlands that the British had occupied for 100 years. Within a decade Kanyari had been tortured, beaten and castrated by soldiers of the same army he had been proud to serve with. His crime? Taking the secret oath and joining the underground liberation army known as Mau Mau. Fighting for independence, Mau Mau attacked police posts and assassinated Kenyans loyal to the Crown. Assaulting remote farms, they struck fear into the white community, killing 32 settlers and making Mau Mau a byword in Britain for what was then termed ‘sa...

The Bizarre Story Of Patty Hearst, The Kidnapped Heiress Who Joined The Symbionese Liberation Army

-

"First person puts up his head, I'll blow his motherf**king head off!" That's what publishing heiress Patty Hearst said as she robbed a San Francisco bank on April 15, 1974. But she didn't introduce herself by her birth name. Instead, she reportedly called herself "Tania," the name she'd taken after joining the Symbionese Liberation Army, a leftist guerrilla group. It was a shocking transformation for the apolitical 19-year-old — especially since the SLA had actually kidnapped Hearst from her Berkeley home just a couple of months prior. The bank incident led many to believe that Hearst was forced into joining the group while in captivity. But others were convinced that she was genuinely radicalized, especially since just one month later, she fired multiple bullets outside of a Los Angeles store to help her "comrades" escape from being arrested for shoplifting. In 1974, a group of leftist radicals calling themselves the “Symbionese Li...
