Vietnamese bar girls & GFs of the 1960s & 1970s (many pics) These are some pretty nice looking ladies. I suppose I have an affinity with those times as my primary and secondary school years coincided with the Vietnam war and it ended the year I left school/home. Growing up as a teenager, our family had the habit of eating an early dinner and then watching the news on TV at 7pm. And of course the Vietnam war featured in the headlines. So I grew up on a diet of this sort of news. I still have vivid memories of the monk who splashed petrol and lit himself in protest, the viet traitor guy that was shot in the head point blank with a pistol in the street and the napalm girl running away for help.. Around 1971-72, my father was offered a job on a hydro dam project in Cambodia and was all set to go and then, the civil war there got worse and the project was shut down. Australia had a ballot system for conscription to serve in Vietnam and my older brother drew a short straw with his mo...

The public executions of Indian Muslims soldiers by British firing squad for refusing to fight in WWI (The 1915 Singapore Mutiny) The 5th Light Infantry Regiment of the Indian Army arrived in Singapore from Madras in October 1914. They had been sent to replace the Yorkshire Light Infantry, which had been ordered to France. The regiment was a long established one dating from 1803. Unusually for 1914-15 it was an entirely Muslim unit. In November 1914, the British government decided to send the 5th Light Infantry to Hong Kong. However, rumours were circulated among the sepoys that they might be sent to Europe or Turkey, to fight against their Muslim brethren. When the order to sail to Hong Kong aboard the Nile arrived in February 1915, the sepoys (Indian soldiers), believing the rumours to be true, decided it was the time to rebel. The Bolshevik's (Russians) would round up every village in the east and south of Poland and cleanse them whilst leaving behind the women for rape before k...

These 7 inventions were supposed to change the world. They failed. Badly

In 2001, author Steve Kemper got a $250,000 advance to write about a forthcoming invention that, he said, "would sweep over the world and change lives, cities, and ways of thinking." The media went into a frenzy trying to predict what it might be. Some sort of miraculous Stirling engine that would run on hydrogen, perhaps? The invention turned out to be the Segway, and it was more punchline than revolutionary transportation device. As you've probably noticed, the Segway never became a feasible alternative to cars in developing nations (as its inventor Dean Kamen predicted) and it didn't solve the problem of gridlock. History is filled with examples of new inventions that supporters thought would be transformational — and then turned out to be minor fads. And these failures show how hard it is for inventors to anticipate society's needs. It's tough to predict what will change the world, because it's tough to predict how the world will change. 1) ...

American soldier killed by German snipers in Leipzig, 1945
American soldier killed by German snipers in Leipzig, 1945 War photographer Robert Capa took this iconic photo of an American soldier shot and killed by a German sniper in the battle for Leipzig on 18 April 1945. The soldier became known as the ‘last man to die’ in WWII after the image appeared in Life magazine’s Victory issue.... During the final days of the war, a platoon of machine gunners entered a Leipzig building looking for positions to set up covering fire points that would protect foot soldiers of the 2nd U.S. Infantry advancing across the bridge. Two members of the platoon found an open balcony that commanded on an unobstructed view of the bridge, set up their gun. For a while, one soldier fired the gun while the other fed it. Then one soldier went inside and the other manned the smoking gun alone. While absorbed in reloading it, a German sniper’s bullet from the street pierced his forehead. He crumpled to the floor, dead. War photographer Robert Capa climbed through a b...

‘The Vietnam War’ Filmmaker on the Horrifying Execution Footage That’s ‘Unbearable to Look At’ Episode 6 dives deep into the Tet Offensive: the misconceptions, the absolute carnage, and the fallout that occurred in both Vietnam and the U.S. The following contains an image of graphic violence below, a photo taken during the war that is being discussed in context with the documentary and the Tet Offensive.] At the halfway point of Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s “The Vietnam War,” the documentary series reaches the Tết Offensive, one of the biggest military offensives by the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong that turned the tide of the war, even though it was deemed a failure. Episode 6, titled “Things Fall Apart” is one of the most relentless and graphically violent installments of the series so far, but is absolutely essential viewing to understanding how both the Vietnamese and Americans viewed the war going forward.
