Lottie Rae, 32, took up the unusual role to make some extra money in 2017, and charges £50 an hour - estimating she's made a few thousand pounds over the years. During the late Meiji Era, Japan tried to put on a facade as a "civilized imperial power" of sorts. It was noted that they treated Russian prisoners exceptionally well in 1905. But by all accounts, their treatment of Chinese and Korean prisoners and civilians during the Sino Japanese War of 1895 were nothing short of barbaric. In fairness, that's not at all inconsistent with the other "civilised imperial powers" of the time. In  general  they tended to extend much better treatment towards one another in war than they did to unruly colonial subjects. During apartheid in South Africa, Japanese were officially considered white while Chinese were considered as black. My late wife was Korean. She grew up with her mother and grandmother. Her grandfather was kidnapped (volunteered) by the Japanese to fight in WWII. When they led him away from her grandmother was the last time anyone from her family saw him alive.
