Japanese soldier executing an Atayal tribe fighter with a katana during their military repression in Taroko, Imperial Japan occupied Taiwan, 1914 FYl during Imperial Japan's occupation of the island of Taiwan (1895 - 1945), one of the biggest headaches they encountered was the resistance of the indigenous tribes, one of the reasons were due to these tribes mostly living deep the mountains, which makes traveling and navigating for the Japanese forces very hard. Therefore, the Japanese later on deployed the strategy of utilizing the conflicts between these tribes to have them hunt each other themselves and later conquer them all. The Tapani incident or Tapani uprising in 1915 was one of the biggest armed uprisings by Taiwanese Han and Aboriginals, including Taivoan, against Japanese rule in Taiwan. Alternative names used to refer to the incident include the Xilai Temple Incident after the Xilai Temple in Tainan, where the revolt began, and the Yu Qingfang Incident after the leader Yu...

Shackles, convulsions and sheer terror: life on death row in China However limited Akmal Shaikh's mental capacities, the 4kg of heroin that he brought into Urumqi Airport in 2007 means that he faces a truly terrible fate. In China, he is far from alone. Some 68 crimes carry the death penalty, including corruption and tax fraud as well as murder; more people are executed by the state here than in any other country. While some Chinese provinces have switched to the lethal injection as a means of execution, Xinjiang province has not and Mr Shaikh will be executed by a bullet to the back of the neck. The blog testimony of one worker closely involved in the execution process gives a grisly insight into exactly how executions happen in China. It's a nightmare world he describes, in which a disconsolate, condemned man sitting in handcuffs, with fetters on his feet, discusses funeral arrangements with his relatives, before the police take him off to the place of execution. "Arriv...

A little girl being showcased in a human zoo, 1958 Yes, you read that right. People, usually from Africa or indigenous areas were taken from their homes and toured around the world for the entertainment of others. Seen here is a little girl from Africa in a western dress being fed from the hand of one of the bystanders at the event, like an animal in a cage. The most astonishing thing about these is that they existed right until the 1960s when they were deemed to breach human rights. This human zoo was in Belgium. Other human zoos existed too. In Missouri America, there was the Igorot Village, which you can see in the second image. The Igorrote people are an indigenous tribe from the Philippines. The US spent $1.5 million to round up about 1,500 Igorrote members who would volunteer to come to the US. There, they would find themselves in a fake village at Coney Island amusement park. They were not well known to the US at the time Each Igorot was paid $15 a month (about $466.31 today) to...

Went to a torture museum. Dont click if you're easily grossed out technology For the bull one: they put the person inside a metal bull and essentially cooked them I've seen people say that the pear one might not have been used for torture as there is no proof that it was used in the olden days. Idk but that sounds like a nightmare. All of them do. SMH sawed in half s) The little proof that it was used, was in the mouth, and not to break it, but to shut someone up in a very unpleasant way, I believe. Also, most depictions of it occur during the 16th and 17th centuries, long after the Middle Ages were over. Iron Maiden's didn't appear until traveling oddity shows became popular in the 1800s. Despite its reputation as a medieval instrument of torture, there is no evidence of the existence of iron maidens before the 19th century. There are, however, ancient reports of the Spartan tyrant Nabis using a similar device around 200 B.C. for extortion and murder. The Abbasid vizie...

A man convicted of raping and murdering a three-year-old girl was executed in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Monday in front of hundreds of onlookers, the first public execution there since 2009. "Security was very tight, because authorities were fearing a revenge attack by armed men from the Bani Matar tribe to which the girl's family belong," said Reuters photographer Khaled Abdullah who witnessed the scene. The police van transporting Muhammad al-Maghrabi, 41, to Sanaa's Tahrir Square was escorted by five police patrol vehicles. The execution drew a large number of onlookers, some perched up telegraph poles and many watching from rooftops. The crowd started to shout "Allah is the greatest" when Maghrabi arrived. "The man was escorted from the van to the middle of the square, and then the place turned to a complete chaos and I fought for a position to take pictures," Abdullah said. "He tried to talk to the executioner, a police officer who was ...

Forfar Witch Trials end. Helen Guthrie executed
Forfar Witch Trials end. Helen Guthrie executed. On the 14th of November 1662 the last 'witch' Helen Guthrie is executed at the old Playing field in Forfar (Victoria Street, Tweedmill Brae, North Street). Helen Guthrie gave many confessions and is quite the controversial figure. After her arrest in September 1661, she aided the witch hunters in naming many others, claiming that she herself was a witch and could identify another witch by sight. She is even said to have cursed the town of Forfar. She did this to keep herself and her young daughter alive as long as possible. By aiding the witch hunters she condemned many others to death, but she did so to prevent her young daughter Jonet, who was between the ages of 10 -13, from being subjected to torture. Despite the Forfar Witch Trials ending in 1662, when Helen was strangled to death and her body burned in a barrel of tar, her daughter Jonet remained in the tollbooth prison until 1666. A child forced to grow up in the cold and...
It's fine to make out in public, but sexual acts should be confined only to the bedroom
Stomper Anonymous feels that every couple has the freedom to display their affection for one another in their own way, but sexual advances should be done only behind closed doors. This is his entry for October's What Say You topic, 'Making out in public: How far is too far?' Every couple has the right to show their affection or love to each other in their own way. We are living in a very modern society where our laws are based on logic and analysis, not based on religion like other certain countries. However, the special thing about Singapore is that our country is very conservative and majority of the population believe that upbringing must be infused with cultural or religious beliefs and practices. This group of people also has a right to practice their upbringing and beliefs to their children and the public display of affection (PDA) might interfere with this teachings. Being a Muslim myself, I know Islam does forbid physical contact between...

In the 1990s and early 2000s, police in Saskatoon, Canada often left people in the cold so they freeze to dea*th On November 29, 1990, the body of 17-year-old Neil Stonechild was found face down in a field across the street from a manufacturing center five miles north of Saskatoon's city center. That night, the temperature had dropped to -18 degrees Fahrenheit, but Stonechild was dressed only in a T-shirt and jeans along with a lightweight jacket and just one shoe. The last time anyone had seen Stonechild was five days earlier — when he was handcuffed in the backseat of a police cruiser with blood streaming down his face. And the last thing a friend remembers him saying was, "Help me. They're going to ki*ll me." According to the Saskatoon police department's official report, Stonechild d*ied of hypothermia after getting drunk and walking away from a party in order to turn himself in at a police station for an open warrant. But that version of events never ma...
: Hannelore Schmatz On October 2, 1979, 39-year-old Hannelore Schmatz and her team led by her husband
Hannelore Schmatz. On October 2, 1979, 39-year-old Hannelore Schmatz and her team led by her husband, had reached the summit of Mount Everest via the southern route. On their way down, the expedition was forced to stop about 100 meters shortof Camp IV (there are four camps before the summit), where Schmatz collapsed and died from exhaustion. Another climber, American Ray Genet, also died, but the rest of the team survived. In the ensuing years, Schmatz’s body haunted people climbing the southern route. Her body was recognizable because it appeared to be sitting casually, still dressed in the clothes she died in. Also, even though she was dead, her eyes were openand her hair would blow in the wind. In 1984, a Nepalese police officer and a Sherpa tried to move Schmatz’s body, but they died in the process. After about 20 years, the wind pushed Schmatz’s body into a valley below where it remains to this day. CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEO .
