On 1 February 1968, after the outbreak of the Tet offensive, Associated Press photographer Eddie Adams captured the moment South Vietnamese General Nguyen Ngoc Loan, chief of the national police, executed Viet Cong officer Nguyen Van Lem, also known as Bay Lop, on a street in Saigon. It became one of the most famous photos of the Vietnam War, won Adams the 1969 Pulitzer Prize and stirred up the anti-war movement in the United States.
⠀
⠀
But few people know the story behind the image. According to South Vietnamese sources, Lem was a member of a Viet Cong death squad who had been targeting and killing South Vietnamese police officers and their families. Lem was allegedly captured at the site of a mass grave and had executed South Vietnamese Lt. Col. Nguyen Tuan, his wife, five of their six children, and the officer's 80-year-old mother less than 36 hours prior to his capture.
⠀
The lone survivor of Tuan's family, Huan Nguyen, was 9 years old at the time. He was shot three times during the attack that killed his family and stayed with his mother for two hours as she bled out and died. In 2019, he became the highest-ranking Vietnamese-American officer in the U.S. military when he was promoted to the rank of rear admiral in the United States Navy (swipe left).
Anticipating the impact of Adams' photograph, assistant managing editor of the NYT agreed to run the picture large, but offset with a picture of a child killed by the Vietcong. However, Adams' photograph became famous, and the other image was soon forgotten. Adams later regretted the impact of the photo and wrote: "Two people died in that photograph: the recipient of the bullet and General Nguyen Ngoc Loan. The general killed the Viet Cong; I killed the general with my camera."
⠀
After the fall of Saigon in 1975, Loan fled South Vietnam to the United States. In 1978, the Immigration and Nationalization Services (INS) wanted to deport him partially because of the photo taken by Adams. They approached Adams to testify against Loan, but Adams instead testified in his favor, and Loan was allowed to stay. (colorized by @lorenzofolli_history_in_color)

Man beat and stripped cheating wife fully naked – As neighbours stood to watch (See Photos) Man beat and stripped cheating wife – Just saw a gruesome video online that broke my heart. Men… and even women stood and watched as this man stripped his wife to her underwear and brutally beat her with a plank. The people who posted the video online said he beat her to death, but that isn’t shown in the video. The last seconds of the video shows the man dragging the very weak woman away. They said the man attacked his wife after catching her with another man. And no, it didn’t happen in Nigeria. I screen-grabbed from the video. Florida's Messiest Execution
Florida's Messiest Execution On July 8, 1999, the execution of Allen Lee Davis set off a shock wave that rippled around the world. During his time in the electric chair, Davis bled profusely from the nose and suffered burns to his head, leg, and groin area. As the switch was thrown, the “Tiny” Davis, who was executed for the May 11, 1982, murder of Nancy Weiler and her two daughters, reared back against the restraints, giving witnesses a chilling glimpse under a black hood designed to hide the faces of the condemned. Blood poured from his vivid purple nose, ran down the wide leather strap that covered his mouth and soaked the white shirt. After the power was turned off, Davis was still alive. Witnesses said his chest rose and fell about 10 times before he went still. After the execution, state prison officials and Governor Jeb Bush said the Old Sparky functioned properly. Three photos of the incident have been published on Florida’s High Court official website in an attempt to argu...

An accidental selfie was taken by Tsar Nicolas II, the last tsar of Russia. It is possible that he accidentally took a photo of himself, or that his camera has just randomly captured a photo, nonetheless, it is relatable to modern times. Nicolas II was the last tsar of Russia and the last Tsar of the Romanov royalty family line, and is known in history for being a particularly poor leader. When communist organizations such as the Bolsheviks grew in power in Russia during the early 1900s, they took control of Russia in October 1917, which became known as the October Revolution. This rebellion was largely due to poor infrastructure, the effects World War I was having on Russia, and the lack of access to food to the general public, as well as the terrible economy at the time. The Bolsheviks, led by Vladimir Lenin, seized power in Russia after the Russian Republic was established after the abdication of the Tsar. Lenin's seizure of power would lead to the establishment of the Soviet Un...
