Homeless Portland woman, 33, is found guilty of shoving girl, 3, onto train tracks in horrifying incident caught on video - where toddler was rescued and treated for multiple head injuries

The homeless Portland woman who shoved a toddler onto train tracks in December 2022 will head to a mental institution after being found guilty of the heinous crime. 

 

Brianna Lace Workman, 33, was convicted Wednesday on five charges after she deliberately pushed a three-year-old child onto Max Light Rail train tracks at the Gateway Transit Center in Oregon. 

The little girl fell face-first onto the tracks but was quickly rescued by another passenger before a train came by. She was left with a red mark on her head and a headache. 

Workman was charged with first-degree attempted assault, third-degree assault, interfering with public transportation, second-degree disorderly conduct, and recklessly endangering another person. She was found guilty except for insanity on all charges. 

According to KATU, the unnamed victim and her family, who had no prior interaction with Workman, were present at the hearing and 'look forward to their continued healing.' 

TriMet officers responded to the frightening encounter that was captured on surveillance video as Workman snuck up behind the child and her mother and pushed the toddler forward. 

There were no trains coming when the girl was shoved onto the medal tracks, witnesses said. 

Blaine Danley, a MAX rider, told KPTV there is 'no excuse' for what Workman did. 

'I don't understand why someone would do something like that,' Danley said. 

Another rider, Michael Reed, told Fox 12 that what she did was 'really cruel,' and that 'people just don't care anymore.' 

This is not Workman's first criminal offense, as the woman was also arrested in June 2021 after she slashed a man with a knife after he invited her to her house for a meal. 

According to court documents, Workman said she had 'blacked out' and 'had a mental breakdown' at the time of the violent incident.

'I don't know why I hit him. I was trying to kill myself by stabbing him,' she told police at the time. 

It is unclear why, but a district attorney chose to dismiss her 2021 case and said that the DA's office was 'unable to proceed.' 

After being found guilty, she was transported to Oregon State Hospital and placed under the jurisdiction of the Psychiatric Security Review Board for treatment and will serve a maximum of 10 years. 

Workman is part of the city's homeless population in Portland, which has seen a significant increase in recent years. 

According to the City of Portland, overall homelessness increased by 65 percent from 2015 to 2023, with 6,297 homeless people counted in the latest Point in Time Count. 

Along with Portland's huge homeless problem, the city have also seen a surge in fentanyl use and recently declared a state of emergency over the crippling crisis.  

The 90-day state of emergency was made by Governor Tina Kotek, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson. 

They have directed agencies to work alongside first responders in connecting people addicted to the synthetic opioid with resources including drug treatment programs and to crack down on drug sales.

Fentanyl addicts who interact with first responders in downtown Portland  in the next 90 days are set to be triaged by this new command center. 

Staff can connect people with various resources from a bed in a drug treatment center to meeting with a behavioral health clinician to help with registering for food stamps. 

'Our country and our state have never seen a drug this deadly addictive, and all are grappling with how to respond,' Kotek said. 

The program doesn't establish any goals to measure success. Kotek said the next 90 days will provide a road map for the next steps. 

Despite passing key ordinances within the past year to tackle drug use and homelessness , the city faces impediments as it deals with addiction and unsanctioned camps.
