Fishermen find an alleged fugitive NAKED up a tree in a crocodile-infested creek after he spent FOUR days on the run from police and ate snails to survive - before sharing a beer together
A fugitive on the run from police after allegedly committing an armed robbery, and cutting his electronic tracking device, was rescued in a bizarre scene at a crocodile-infested Darwin waterway.
The fishermen who found him, Kev Joiner and Cam Faust, told Daily Mail Australia they only heard the lucky man's desperate cries when they stopped to drop crab pots on Sunday evening.
He was in a tree, naked and caked in mud, in a mangrove near East Point.
'We heard him screaming for help real loud: “heeelp!"' And that he wanted water,' Joiner said.
The two friends were 'hesitant' to stop. 'We thought he looked like a nutcase. But he was saying: "I can see you, please don’t leave me here!"
'When we got close we could see he was covered in mud and bites and his feet were swollen.'
'He was pretty lucky really because we couldn’t get the boat going that day and we only got out not long before 6pm,' Joiner says. 'The sun goes down not long after that.'
The swamps around Darwin have been labelled 'crocodile heaven' because the murky water and poor light. Giant saltwater crocs also breed and lay eggs there.
'There would have been crocs in there, for sure,' Joiner says.
The escapee told Joiner and Faust that he had 'been here four days and I’ve been living on snails'.
'We didn’t understand why he had no clothes on. We tried to talk to him but he wasn’t making much sense. He was talking gibberish really.
'My mate [Cam] had to give him his shorts. He'd done his dash and he was ready to give up.'
‘We helped him into the tinny and he skulled our water. We gave him a beer and then we called the ambos. They met us at the boat ramp.
NT Police Northern Watch Commander Len Turner confirmed to The NT News that the escapee was a wanted man.
'He was placed into custody and is now at Royal Darwin Hospital being treated for the harsh conditions that he subjected himself to,' Mr Turner said
'While at large it is alleged he has committed further offences, and for the last few days he's been avoiding police by hiding out at scrub land in Howard Springs and Palmerston areas.'
The man must have crossed through several suburbs and towns to reach the mangroves north of Darwin.
The alleged fugitive was due to face court today.
