Ann Lovett, The Girl Whom Society Failed, 1984

Ann Lovett was a schoolgirl from County Longford, Ireland, who tragically died after giving birth to a stillborn infant at the age of 15. She was described as intelligent, lively, and artistically talented. On January 31st, 1984, Lovett left her home for school and went to a local grotto, where she gave birth to a stillborn son under a statue of the Virgin Mary. She cut the umbilical cord with scissors and wrapped the infant in her coat.

Around 4 PM, three school boys found a school bag outside the grotto and heard Lovett moaning. They alerted a farmer, who went to the local holy house, where Francis Canon Gilfillan resided. Gilfillan initially denied helping, claiming that it was a job for a doctor. An ambulance was called, but Lovett died of shock and post-birth bleeding.

The death of Lovett remains unanswered, with her boyfriend Ricky McDonnell claiming that she approached him in April 1983 and showed signs of a physical and sexual attack. McDonnell also claims that rumours about her pregnancy circulated in October 1983, and he confronted Lovett about them. Lovett claimed to have gained weight and laughed off the accusations.

After Lovett's death, McDonnell claims that two letters written by Lovett's mother, Patricia, were given to him, explaining that she hid the pregnancy from him and expressed regret for her actions. A friend of Ann also claims to have seen the letter herself, which said, "If I'm not dead by the 31st of January, I'm going to k*ll myself anyway." It has been suggested that the birth at the grotto may have been an act of protest against the Catholic church.

McDonnell also claims that a local priest demanded to see the letters and burn them upon learning of their contents. It is alleged that the nuns running the secondary school that Lovett attended may have known about the pregnancy but have not confirmed or denied this information.

Since 1984, many debates in Ireland regarding the Catholic church's influence have been held. In the 2018 abortion referendum, Lovett's case was used as a pro-choice example. Abortion has been legal in Ireland as of 2019.
