Edit: Normally with authentic images of this sort, you find a lot of links on a reverse image search that link to historical and academic websites. The many different websites that turn up with this image are white supremacy, blog posts and conspiracy websites. This isn't exactly inspiring my confidence.
I know the Japanese committed insane amounts of atrocities in China (and elsewhere), however first hand images are very rare. They weren't fools. Most of the authentic images you find were taken by survivors after the soldiers moved on. A quick googling shows quite a lot of "horrific" images that are clearly fakes.
This one strikes me as fake for a number of reasons. First off his head doesn't seem to fit his body, the head seems to be being held strangely by the ear which would be an odd way to hold if if you know how heavy a head is. And why would he be holding it anyway? The Chinese were seen as sub human, a head wouldn't be considered a trophy to be held up. Usually heads were left in prominent positions after they moved on from an area to intimidate the locals, not taken with them to be paraded and none of the bodies at his feet are decapitated and are laying flat on their backs. The Japs made their victims kneel down and forward.
Not to mention how knackered he'd be if he'd spend any time choping heads, never mind being in a race. Where's the blood on his uniform? Where's the sweat?
