The body of a Japanese soldier on Iwo Jima island. The battle of Iwo Jima is the only time that American casualties exceeded Japanese in World War II, February 1945 by Eugen W. Smith.
The Battle of Iwo Jima (19 February – 26 March 1945) was a major battle in which the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and United States Navy (USN) landed on and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) during World War II. The American invasion, designated Operation Detachment, had the purpose of capturing the island with its two airfields: South Field and Central Field.
The Japanese Army positions on the island were heavily fortified, with a dense network of bunkers, hidden artillery positions, and 18 km (11 mi) of tunnels. The American ground forces were supported by extensive naval artillery and had complete air supremacy provided by U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviators throughout the battle. The five-week battle saw some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting of the Pacific War.
The Japanese combat deaths numbered three times the number of American deaths, but unique among Pacific War Marine battles, the American total casualties (dead and wounded) exceeded those of the Japanese. Of the 21,000 Japanese soldiers on Iwo Jima at the beginning of the battle, only 216 were taken prisoner, some of whom were captured only because they had been knocked unconscious or otherwise disabled. Most of the remainder were killed in action, but it has been estimated that as many as 3,000 continued to resist within the various cave systems for many days afterwards until they eventually succumbed to their injuries or surrendered weeks later. Despite the fighting and severe casualties on both sides, the American victory was assured from the start. Overwhelming American superiority in numbers and arms, air supremacy, the impossibility of Japanese retreat or reinforcement, and sparse food and supplies for the Japanese, permitted no plausible circumstance in which the Japanese could have won the battle.
The action was controversial, with retired Chief of Naval Operations William V. Pratt stating that the island was useless to the Army as a staging base and useless to the Navy as a fleet base. The Japanese continued to have early-warning radar from Rota island, which was never invaded. Experiences with previous Pacific island battles suggested that the island would be well-defended and thus casualties would be significant.
Joe Rosenthal's Associated Press photograph of the raising of the U.S. flag at the top of the 169 m (554 ft) Mount Suribachi by six U.S. Marines became a famous image of the battle and the American war effort in the Pacific.
So far, there's an 80 year streak of result
The most impressive thing by a longshot is that the U.S. didn't use them on the Soviet Union while the
U.S. still had a monopoly on a super weapon. I can't think of any world power throughout history that
would exercise restraint with that kind of power supremacy. It was maybe the biggest victory of morality over power in human history.
it's because of the USA/western
dominance. Take NATO as a modern example. Any country that got into a conflict with any nato country is screwed. And NATO is a substantial
portion of the world socially, culturally, politically, economically.
I'm not saying this western dominance (Pax Americana?) is a good thing. Just that it is the truth. Specifically, practically nothing happens on the world stage without the US knowing about it or often approving it.
It makes sense that other countries seek American approval, because the US has such a large sphere
of influence (arguably the only country of the 21 st century to have a substantial sphere of influence).
Everyone wants to erase the past instead of looking to it for answers on how to make the world a better place.
It's people like us who love history that only care

Man beat and stripped cheating wife fully naked – As neighbours stood to watch (See Photos) Man beat and stripped cheating wife – Just saw a gruesome video online that broke my heart. Men… and even women stood and watched as this man stripped his wife to her underwear and brutally beat her with a plank. The people who posted the video online said he beat her to death, but that isn’t shown in the video. The last seconds of the video shows the man dragging the very weak woman away. They said the man attacked his wife after catching her with another man. And no, it didn’t happen in Nigeria. I screen-grabbed from the video. : Hannelore Schmatz On October 2, 1979, 39-year-old Hannelore Schmatz and her team led by her husband
Hannelore Schmatz. On October 2, 1979, 39-year-old Hannelore Schmatz and her team led by her husband, had reached the summit of Mount Everest via the southern route. On their way down, the expedition was forced to stop about 100 meters shortof Camp IV (there are four camps before the summit), where Schmatz collapsed and died from exhaustion. Another climber, American Ray Genet, also died, but the rest of the team survived. In the ensuing years, Schmatz’s body haunted people climbing the southern route. Her body was recognizable because it appeared to be sitting casually, still dressed in the clothes she died in. Also, even though she was dead, her eyes were openand her hair would blow in the wind. In 1984, a Nepalese police officer and a Sherpa tried to move Schmatz’s body, but they died in the process. After about 20 years, the wind pushed Schmatz’s body into a valley below where it remains to this day. CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEO .

Dead bobcat found in tree
Dead bobcat found in tree Montcalm County, MI (WNEM ) -- Officials are trying to figure out how a bobcat died, and its body ended up in a tree. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources got a call about a dead bobcat hanging in a tree earlier this week. John Niewoonder, a wildlife biologist for the DNR, went out to the Flat River State Game area, in Montcalm County’s Fairplain Township, and found the animal hanging in a tree or bush about 2-3 feet off the ground. He said the animal, a large male that weighed around 25-30 pounds, was thrown in the tree next to Jenks Road. “I’m guessing it was hit by a vehicle. It’s possible someone shot it, but that’s much less likely,” said Niewoonder. Niewoonder said the area is rural, and not well traveled, so it’s hard to determine exactly when the animal died. A necropsy is scheduled to figure out a cause. You cannot hunt bobcat in the area, but there is a hunting and trapping season for the breed in the Upper Peninsula and northern part of the ...
