Today 109 years ago, on January 8, 1915, the Battle of Crouy began, also called the Battle of Soissons, between French and German forces as part of the First Battle of Champagne.

On December 20, 1914, the French launched the First Battle of Champagne along a 19-km-long front near the city of Reims. Although achieving small gains and suffering huge casualties, the Germans were badly outnumbered and were in need of relief from the French attacks.

In order to shorten their lines and disrupt the French offensive, the Germans planned an attack on the village of Crouy situated right on the Aisne river, northeast of the city of Soissons, with the aim of conquering the Vregny Plateau dominating the plains. The Germans would pin their 5th Infantry Division and 7th Reserve Division against the French 55th and 56th Infantry Divisions.

The German attack at Crouy was planned for mid-January 1915, but on January 8, the French suddenly launched an attack of their own at Crouy, catching the Germans by surprise.

Fierce combat commenced around Crouy, with the French advancing and conquering the Hill 132. On January 9 and 10 the French continued their attacks, suffering heavy losses but nevertheless advancing.

However, on January 11, heavy rains set in and the right bank of the Aisne flooded, threatening to cut off the French support. Realizing this, on January 12 the Germans launched a general counter-attack and forced the French to retreat.

On January 13, the French soldiers, still on the right bank of the Aisne, launched desperate and violent counter-attacks to hold onto their positions, but these were mostly costly failures. On the night of January 13-14 the French crossed onto the left bank of the Aisne, although suffering heavy losses while doing so to German artillery.
