Whilst the vile treatment of the Congolese under the tyrannical King Leopold II is well known and has been covered on this page previously how he financed this genocide has seeming been forgotten.

The wealthy and influential banking family, the Rothschild's were directly involved with the disturbing events perpetrated by King Leopold II of Belgium in the late 19th century in relation to the brutal exploitation and genocide of the Congo Free State.

Whilst King Leopold II was the sole owner of the Congo Free State, which was a private colony that he used to extract rubber and ivory from the region, the Rothschild family provided financial support to King Leopold II for his colonial ventures in the Congo, including loans and investments in companies that were involved in the exploitation of the region's resources.

As well as these investments the Rothschild's also helped to finance the construction of the Congo Free State's infrastructure, such as railways and ports, which facilitated the extraction of resources from the region.

This is far from the only time the Rothschild's invested in human suffering having funded both Britain and France during the Napoleonic wars, profiteering and gaining political influence from the brutal conflict.

Utley worked with the Office of War Information and used their photographs in news articles to inform soldiers of the progress of the war. At war's end, Utley returned stateside.
