A Soviet partisan moments before being executed by German forces, Eastern Front, World War Il
The look on the guy's face with the gun says so much. He looks so pissed off and determined. How could you have So much hatred for someone? Wow.
He's disgusted with himself for committing what he knows to be a vile act, but steels himself against the
knowledge that if he fails to show commitment, then he will simply be the next in line.
The weird thing about this photo is that executing partisans was and is legal under the Geneva Convention and the laws and customs of war.
The war on the eastern front between the Germans and Soviets was a completely different war than the ones the Germans were fighting against the British and Americans. Hitler called the war in the east a "War of total annihilation," and the Soviets returned that sentiment.
They were able to do this to their fellow human beings because they did not perceive each other as humans, and this is what makes much of what happened in central and eastern Europe so hard to understand for most Westerners, we can't comprehend the level of hatred these groups had for each other.
