TORTURE BY INSECTS

Since time immemorial, people used biting and stinging insects to punish and kill prisoners of war, spies, murderers and rapists. Insect torture has always been considered one of the most painful.

According to the historian Plutarch, in 401 BC the Persian warrior Mithridates was put in a trough and forcibly fed a large quantity of milk and honey. He was left in his own filth while the smell attracted hordes of insects which slowly devoured his flesh and deposited larvae in it. Mithridates suffered 17 days and died of extensive infection.

This execution was called "scaphism".  In African and South American countries, a prisoner was coated with honey, or sugar syrup and stretched on stakes in the way of ant migration. Millions of insects nibbled on a tiny piece of flesh, and continued their journey, leaving on the ground a gnawed skeleton. In Siberia, people were planted directly on an anthill, and the indigenous peoples of America made an incision under the skin of the enemy, allowing access to his liver.

 In countries with a humid climate, people were coated with sweets or their own feces, and sent to a swamp where they became the food of mosquitoes.  The jailers of the NKVD (the special services of the USSR in the first half of the 20th century), to interrogate a man, put him in a box full of blood-sucking bugs. In Cambodia in the 1970s, during the reign of Pol Pot in prisons, in addition to conventional torture devices, there were reservoirs with scorpions, which were placed on the naked bodies of prisoners with special forceps.
