A Los Angeles Investigator may have discovered that the authorities and the enthusiast in the Zodiac Killer Case may have been chasing the wrong face. Although the Zodiac Killer sent in a piece of bloody shirt from Paul Stine, could he have just been a witness to the murder and not the killer? Yes!

One of the Zodiac Killers victims Paul Lee Stine (October 11th 1969, San Francisco California colorized) When Mr. Stine picked up a mysterious man later to be identified as the zodiac killer in his cab the zodiac instructed Stine to go to corner of ,Washington and Maple near the Presidio in the high end neighbor hood of Presidio Hieghts. Then the zodiac tells Stine to go up one block and once Stine put the cab in park the zodiac fired one 9mm shot to the back of his head. After murdering Paul Stine, he then cuts off a piece of Paul Stine's shirt and soaks up some blood with it . He used these peices of shirt to prove he was the killer of Paul Stine.

Cab driver Paul Stine, age 29, was shot once in the head at point-blank range. The weapon was a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, not the same 9mm used in the Ferrin murder. There were three witnesses from a house on the southeast corner of the intersection

Stine's cab was hailed at Mason and Geary Streets, with the intended destination being Washington and Maple Streets near the Presidio. For reasons unknown, the cab ended up at Washington and Cherry Streets, a block away from the original destination. Stine's wallet and keys were taken and a large portion of his shirt was carefully torn off. Bloody fingerprints, potentially of the suspect, were recovered from the vehicle. According to a police document, a pair of men's Size Seven black-leather gloves was also found. The three witnesses watched the suspect from approximately 60 feet away as he wiped down the cab with a cloth after killing Stine. They called the police and described a white male, 25 to 30 years old, 5'8" to 5'9", stocky build, reddish-brown hair worn in a crew cut, heavy-rimmed glasses and dark clothing. They last saw him casually walking north on Cherry Street. Unfortunately, the police dispatcher mistakingly described the suspect as being a black male adult. As a result, when patrol officers Donald Fouke and Eric Zelms minutes later observed a white man walking east on Jackson Street, he was never stopped and questioned. The officers did get a good look at him, however. When the correct description of the suspect was finally broadcast, the officers realized they might have encountered him. A search of the area where the man had been observed was conducted, to no avail The man seen by Fouke and Zelms was very similar to the suspect observed by the three witnesses. He was white, 35 to 45 years old, 5'10", between 180 and 200 pounds, barrel chested, with light-colored, crewcut hair and wearing glasses. The man didn't appear to be carrying anything and no conversation between the man and the officers took place. The Stine murder was initially thought to be a routine cabbie-killing, a robbery gone bad. However, on Oct. 13, 1969, the San Francisco Chronicle received a letter from Zodiac containing a portion of bloody shirt and taking credit for the killing. SFPD Inspectors Dave Toschi and Bill Armstrong, who were assigned the case, were shocked to realize the shirt belonged to Stine. Still later, Zodiac would claim he actually spoke with the patrolmen the night of the murder, leading them astray. The three witnesses, though hampered by poor lighting conditions and fog during their observation of the crime, worked with a police composite artist to put a face on Zodiac. A few days after the sketch was circulated throughout the Bay Area in the form of a wanted poster, the witnesses requested the sketch be altered to make it more accurate. Thus another version was made. More than a month after Stine's murder, Officer Fouke finally came forward about his possible encounter with the killer.

Over 50 years ago, citizens of San Francisco found a brief article on the front page of The San Francisco Chronicle titled, “Cabbie Slain in Presidio Heights.” At the time, police believed that the victim, Paul Stine, had been killed during a routine robbery. No one knew that Stine’s murder would become one of the most infamous crimes in American history and that his killer would escape justice for decades.  Then the 'Zodiac Killer' wrote a letter to the San Francisco Chronicle and Paul Avery and took credit for the Murder. The Description of the suspect, as given by teenagers who witnessed a struggle inside the cab, was of a man with a thin face and glasses and a crew cut. It is the most widely believed and distributed picture of the 'Zodiac Killer'.

However, the person of interest and the description of that person at Lake Berryessa is the Zodiac Killer. The person who killed Cecelia Shepard and attempted the murder of Bryan Hartnell, who survived and told the entire story of the long interaction and described the Zodiac outfit made famous by S.F. Chronicle cartoonist Robert Graysmith was witnessed by over 6 people, all day, casing the park and leaving and coming back to the park. It is the iconic Zodiac Murder, undisputed and late night only remained him, Cecelia, and Bryan.

Charles A. Leach, of St. Ignatius High School, at least during 1952 - 1953 is a 'dead ringer' for the sketch that was produced from that murder and attempted murder scene.

Coeds sunbathing all day noticed a suspicious man who came and went several times until they were all gone. It seems that the Zodiac knew he had all day to kill Cecelia and Bryan, most likely because he was the man casing the place all day and knew no one else was there. The composite of that person of interest is the 'Zodiac Killer'. In my opinion, based on the enormous amount of coincidence on a ton of datapoints derived from a private investigation and all the information that has been decoded and extracted from the Zodiac Codes, letters and Ciphers.

Here is the story: The Zodiac was the first passenger in the cab. He picks up the cab at mason and Geary Street. Tells the cabby to take him to the corner of Maple and Washington in the Presidio. Why? Presidio High School is right in the middle of that street. He was casing the ‘rich’ kid school for his bus bomb idea or his school bus attack idea. How to do it and how to get away without being caught and get the highest profile attention for his crimes. –

He gets out of the cab. The cab driver continues down Washington St. towards Cherry St. and gets hailed by another WM. That man gets in and shoots the cabbie in the back of the head. The Zodiac is right there, hears the shot or sees the mussel flash. He knows exactly what it is. The guy in the cab jumps to the front door, opens it and starts to rob the cabby. The 3 witnesses see this and describe a scuffle. They see the head of the WM, crew cut, face, glasses and they go to the phone to call the cops. The killer leaves.

“Charlie’ panics. He now knows that that cab is a 'crime' scene. He runs to the cab, sees that the cab driver has been shot in the head and is bleeding and maybe dead.

knowing the cab is a crime scene, he thinks it is highly possible that his fingerprints are in it and all around the doors. Thinking quickly, He decides to tear a piece of the cabbie’s shirt off and use it for a towel to wipe off his fingerprints wherever he thinks he touched.

The kids come back to the window and see “Charlie” wiping down the cab and now see his body.

They describe him as 5’8” 25 -30 yrs. Old, but confuse his face with the first guy, because they don’t see his face this time.

The killer has already left and is heading down Cherry St. to Jackson St. to get to Maple, because that is the only way to get over the fence to the park. The Police are coming up Jackson St and see a taller, thinner man than Charlie that they describe as Welch with a crew cut and glasses. The Detective Foulk gets a good long look at him and says that he was walking with his head down at a medium pace with a blue long coat.

Once Charlie was done, he decides to follow in the direction that the killer left in and according to him, is stopped by the Police, who ask him if he saw a man with a gun. Charlie responds, "Yes, he went that away"! A classic right out of Bugs Bunny. In describing what I think an interaction would be with Police, if Charlie interacted with them. Maybe they just went by, as the Police Officers said they had no interaction with anyone, as they were traveling and arrived on scene.

Not even believing his luck, knowing he is the Zodiac, but not the killer of Paul Stine, he heads to the park to watch all the police for the rest of the evening, looking for Paul Stines' killer.

The Police were looking for a black man, because that is what they thought they heard on the radio. It was later cleared up to be a man in all black.  So, when they see the murderer, who they describe with the crew cut and glasses as a WM 5’ 10” between 180 -200 pounds, they just pass him by.

Charlie is amazed at the scene, goes in the park and just watches all of it going down.  He feels great, because now he thinks that he is not the only nut case in town, in my opinion.

The next day or two, he gets the idea to take credit for the murder, because it is a way to test what the police have as evidence, bring more attention to himself as the Zodiac, but also throw everyone off his trail as they think the tall, thin man with the crew cut and glasses will be the Zodiac.

But in the letter, he sends to take credit ‘Charlie’ does not describe the murder in detail. He always describes the manner, method and weapon or weapons used to prove he did the murderers, but not this time.

The reason, because he had no idea of the caliber of the gun, or the exact location of the shot, or if any other weapons were used!

Everything he describes, in great detail sounds like a witness, not the killer.

But because he was 'smart' he used the only thing he had in his possession, the bloody shirt to throw the public and law enforcement off of his trail. Why would a serial killer, making bus bomb for school buses, decided to get out of a cab, pay the fare, be recognized as only a passenger, no one knew he was the Zodiac, get back in the cab, pull a gun, demand the wallet of the cab driver, shoot him in the back of the head and create a crime scene.

And if he did kill Paul Stine and steal his wallet and the keys to the car, as the Police Report described, why not mail in the driver's license or the cab license along with the bloody shirt to make sure they knew that it was not just someone walking down the street that found the bloody piece of shirt or at least to really make hard not to believe him.

Because it was the only thing from the crime scene that he had. Because He didn't kill Paul Stine, he was a witness to the murder.
