From the moment they secured a beachhead and through the decades, the paratroopers, soldiers, sailors, and airmen that made up that armada have been heroes to millions. Many of us knew these men only as old men, not the young men they had been when they fought and suffered to free Europe from the tyranny of Nazism. When I was a kid, these guys seemed superhuman to me, despite their age. I had read how they had helped beat the villains Hitler, Tojo, and Mussolini, helping to save the world, just like Superman or Batman did in the comic books I also read. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1943 at the age of 18, attending training at San Luis, Obispo, California. He served with the 1st Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division. During his service he was wounded at New Guinea in June 1944. He reached the rank of Tech 2. Bernard had two older brothers, born in Tacoma, Washington, that served in the Canadian Army during WWII. His brothers were James Cameron Gilbert, who was wounded while serving with the Canadian Infantry, and Charles Frederick Gilbert, who served in the Canadian Armored Service Corps. American troops drag the body of a Viet Cong fighter behind their M113 Armored Personnel Carrier for burial. He was killed in a fierce night attack by several Viet Cong battalions against Australian forces during the Battle of Long Tan As the Vietnam War raged on in 1966, international forces continued to fight against the Viet Cong, attempting to gain a secure foothold in South Vietnam. The night of August 19th, a group of Viet Cong soldiers attacked a battalion of Australian troops in what would become known as the Battle of Long Tan. The Viet Cong troops were driven back by Australian and United States forces and several Viet Cong were killed. The body of one deceased Viet Cong soldier, perhaps out of frustration or in a display of victory, was tied to the back of a US Army tank and dragged behind it.
