Surviving prisoners from Andersonville prison camp, America's death camp, 1864-1865 Andersonville also known as Sumter's camp was a Confederate-run concentration camp during the American Civil War. It was in operation for the last 14 months of the civil war. Andersonville held approximately 45,000, and 13,000 died due to their internment in Andersonville.  Andersonville had several problems which led to high death rates. It is easier to compile them into a list. 1. The water supply was heavily contaminated. At the end of World War II, many French people accused of collaboration with Germany endured a particularly humiliating act of revenge: their heads were shaved in public. There are thousands upon thousands of joyful pictures of the liberation of France in 1944. But among the cheering images there are also shocking ones. To sum it up, when a woman who had engaged in collaboration horizontale — that means having sex with occupying troops — was punished, her head was forcibly shaved as the first step. But did you know it was still sending French prisoners to their deaths as recently as 1977? It all began with Joseph-Ignace Guillotin, a member of the French National Assembly, who was, perhaps ironically, a physician, and keen on medical reform. On October 10, 1789, Guillotin proposed to the Assembly that to make citizens equal, all those sentenced to death should be executed by the same humane means – mechanical decapitation. A contradiction in terms perhaps, but an alternative to the gruesomely theatrical punishments to which commoners had hitherto been subjected.
